Ausangate Trek 5d/4n
Ausangate Trek 5d/4n
For the Incas, Mount Ausangate was one of the most important peaks in the region, and is still considered sacred by local people. Therefore, this mountain is not only a natural miracle, but also has great cultural value. Our trek will take us around the base of the mountain, passing through truly spectacular scenery. Ausangate forms part of the Vilcanota range and is 6384 meters (20,940 feet) high. During our trek we will pass two natural hot springs, where it is possible to bathe and relax. These thermal springs are conveniently located at the beginning and end of the trek, so you´ll be totally relaxed when you´ve finished the hike! The views we pass on this journey are amazing, so if you can truly enjoy nature and want to have a nice time with other tourists, you should definitely join the Ausangate trek.

After a delicious meal we will visit the hot springs in Upis, to bathe and enjoy panoramic views of Mount Ausangate. This is the spot where we will camp for the night.

After breakfast we will begin our day by hiking up to the Arapa Pass, at 4,850 meters (15,900 feet) above sea level. Continuing through the valley, we will pass several lakes (including Q´omercocha, Pucacocha and Turquesa), before ascending to Apuchata Pass, a little bit higher than Arapa Pass. There is a lake here, with turquoise waters, named after Mount Ausangate and formed from its melt waters. This is where we will make camp and rest in preparation for the next day.

Today we will ascend to Palomani Pass. At 5,200 meters (17,055 feet) this is the highest ascent we will make during the entire trek. Crossing this pass, we will enter the Hatunpata Valley. Our final destination for the day is Jampa, where we will make our next camp, surrounding by the truly breathtaking scenery of the high Andes of Peru.
DAY 4: JAMPA – PACCHANTA
Jampa is the final pass on our route. We will pass several highland lakes of varying colors before stopping for a filling lunch at Lake Q’omercocha. Our next destination we will be the small village of Pacchanta, where we will be rewarded with a soothing dip in the local hot springs. Pacchanta is a small village with a peaceful atmosphere, surrounded by a beautiful landscape, making it an excellent place for us to spend the night.
Option: For those who prefer, and at an additional cost, it is possible to stay in a basic hostel here instead of camping.
DAY 5: JAMPA – TINKI – CUSCO
This morning we will hike for 3 hours to the village of Tinki, where our adventure began. This beautiful section of the trek will take us through fine high Andean scenery, with the chance to see alpacas, llamas, and sheep grazing in the pastures along the way.
