Cusco City and Four Ruins Tour

Cusco City and Four Ruins Tour

History books based on the writings of the Spanish chroniclers of the 16th and 17th centuries tell of the mythical beginnings of the Incas, their rapid rise to power, their cultural and technological achievements and their equally rapid defeat at the hands of invaders from Europe’s Iberian Peninsula. Visitors to Cusco will quickly understand that the city they see today is no museum. Its streets and the hills around the city are filled with living culture and vestiges of its rich ancient history. That history feels present in every stone of the city’s narrow streets and the great blocks placed one on top of the other by the Incas to create the monumental structures seen throughout the Cusco region.

This tour includes all the major attractions and gives visitors to Cusco the chance to learn more about its privileged history, as well as to experience the living culture of the Andes, which has survived to this day in many parts of the Cusco region.

The first attraction on this tour is Santo Domingo monastery, which was built over the remains of the Inca temple of Coricancha. This was the Inca Temple of the Sun, the most important sacred site in their vast empire, and the remains of its fine stonework can still be seen, within the elegant baroque church and convent erected on the same site by the Spaniards after the conquest.

From Coricancha we move on the city’s great cathedral. Situated in Cusco’s magnificent main square, the first church on this site was completed in 1571, construction having begun shortly after the conquest. The cathedral we see today, conceived in the renaissance style, dates from the late 17th century.

Leaving the city, we will drive up in the hills around Cusco to visit vestiges of the great monumental sites built by the Incas during their imperial period. The most imposing of these structures is the fortified temple site of Sacsayhuaman, erected on the hill overlooking the northern side of the city’s main square from blocks weighing up to one hundred tons each. Other Inca sites in the hills around Cusco include the semi-subterranean temple of Qenqo, the fortified structure of Pukapukara, and the center for rituals associated with water known as Tambomachay.
