Inka Jungle Trek Machu Picchu 4D/3N

The lower reaches of the Urubamba River flow beyond Machu Picchu and into the Amazon basin. They form the gateway to landscapes very different from those found in the highlands of Cusco, which you can get to know during our journey. However, these jungles are intimately linked to the Cusco region through their history. On this trek we will visit the largely unexplored Inca ruins of Llactapata.

Santa Teresa is the largest village we will pass through during this fascinating hike. Santa Teresa has a warm climate suitable for growing a wide range of products, including many different types of fruits. Our trek will end at the ancient site of Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. So with this trek you get the best of both worlds: you can see the amazing river and jungles ánd be inspired by the astonishing views on Machu Picchu. Join us on this exciting adventure!

DAY 1: CUSCO – MALAGA PASS – SANTA MARIA

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco at around 6:30 am for the drive through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, arriving about 2 hours later at the village of Ollantaytambo. This village is a unique example of Inca urban planning. We will have breakfast in Ollantaytambo before setting off, climbing for around three hours to Malaga Pass (at 4,315 meters / 14,155 feet above sea level). Here is where the adventure begins, as we bike down into the high jungle, surrounded by incredible tropical forest scenery, as far as the village of Santa Maria. We will spend the night in Santa Maria, a pleasant community with a warm climate.

DAY 2: SANTA MARIA – SANTA TERESA

From Santa Maria to Santa Teresa is a distance of around 24 kilometers, passing smallholdings where mangoes, oranges, bananas and coffee are grown.

DAY 3: SANTA TERESA – LLACTAPATA – HIDROELECTRICA – AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU

Very early in the morning we will take a bus to Lucma. This is where our trek will begin, as we walk downhill and then uphill once more until we reach the archaeological site of Llactapata. From here there are wonderful panoramic views of Machu Picchu in the distance. Heading downhill, we will arrive at the hydroelectric plant, where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, it is a 2½ hour walk along the train tracks to the small town of Aguas Calientes, also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo, where we will spend the night in a comfortable hostel with private bathrooms and breakfast included. In the evening we will share a special dinner to celebrate the experience of the preceding days, discussing the highlights of the trip.

If on the last day the group is too tired to walk the final section, it is also possible to take the train to Aguas Calientes.

DAY 4: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHU PICCHU – OLLANTAYTAMBO – CUSCO

Today we will finally visit the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu (2453 meters / 8045 feet). Our plan is to leave the hotel at around 5:30 am for the fifteen minute bus ride up to Machu Picchu, so we can be among the first visitors to reach the ruins, but we can set off a little later on if you are too tired. Your guide will allow some flexibility in this regard, after discussion with the group the night before. We will spend the day visiting what has been hailed as one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. Machu Picchu is situated on a forested mountain peak amid spectacular scenery. During a guided tour of the site the guide will talk about historical and cultural aspects of this lost city. Our visit to Machu Picchu will begin shortly after sunrise, and in the afternoon we will take the train to Ollantaytambo, in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, from where we will head back to Cusco by road.
