Rainbow Mountain Trek 1/D

1: Cusco – Vinicunca – Rainbow Mountain – Vinicunca – Cusco

We will pick you up in the morning at 5:00 am from your hotel in Cusco. it is about a three and a half hour drive in our private vehicle to Vinicunca. During which we will pass through traditional villages and see some amazing views of the Andes.

We wil have breakfast in Vinicunca for 40 minutes aproximately and after ours breakfast, we will begin the hike from Vinicunca, at 4,500 msnm lanscape.

From here, it is about a two and a half hour, uphill hike to reach the famous Rainbow Mountain. Along the way, you will enjoy amazing lanscapes of the Andes, glacial peaks, diferent colors of the mountains, rocky hills, and traditional llamas and alpacas along the valley. As you reach the summit of the mountain, you will be able to spot some Andean wildlife. This is the only place in Cusco where you can see wild Vicuñas, the Andean camel. Vicuñas are in the same family as llamas, although they are smaller. Their wool is the most expensive wool in the world.

Once we arrive at the top of Rainbow Mountain, you will have enough time to enjoy the majesty of the red mountains that surround this area. You will also see amazing views of the valleys and a lot of mountains of the Vilcanota mountain range that is part of the chain of the Andes, the world’s largest chain and is in South America.

Also you can see the sacred Ausangate Mountain in front of you. Ausangate is the tallest mountain of the Cusco region (just under 21,000 ft elevation),

After taking a few amazing pictures and soaking in the views, we have explanation to give information about the composition of these mountains and how they became striated in the rainbow of colors for 30 minutes aproximately then, we will begin our descent with a two half hour, downhill hike. We will then meet up with our trekking chef and enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared, hot bufet lunch in Vinicunca.

What is included?

• One textile snack bag per person, to avoid the usage of plastic bags that contaminate our environment
• Meals as indicated in the itinerary (optional vegetarian food). Our professional cooks prepare meals that incorporate elements of the western diet and also traditional Peruvian delicacies. (Please communicate with your guide/cook during the trek if you have a preference for certain types of dishes). Salads, if served, are washed in boiled water.

• 1 emergency horse which can be ridden if you are feeling ill or if are a little slower
• Dining tent with camp tables and chairs & Kitchen tent for the cook to prepare meals

• Tips: please note that our agency staff is well paid so please feel free to tip or not as you wish.

What we recommend that your bring.

• Rain gear jacket or rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be bought for about $1 in Cusco .
• Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended. Extra socks are a must.
• Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces, gloves, scarf and beanie/touk. Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping. * This is a particularly cold trek, you should make sure you have a lot of very warm clothes.
• Camera, films and batteries
• Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold
• Sun block
• After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body
• We advise you to bring water sterilizing tablets in case you collect water from streams.
• Your own medical kit with any special medications that you might require, paracetamol, second skin for blisters
• Original passport & ISIC (International Student Identity Card) if you have one.
• Walking sticks or poles.
