This hike is one for the real adventurers. Vilcabamba, the second capital of the Andes of Tawantinsuyo, the last haven of the Incas, after Vilcabamba, they moved to Espiritu Pampa, where they formed their village with Manco Inca. On this hike, you can see the mountain valleys of our jungle. This trek consists of the Inca route which was followed by Manco Inca. Also the explorers Vincent Lee and Hugh Thomson walked here, while exploring the world.

Day 1: Cusco – Abra Malaga – Vilcabamba Huancacalle
In the morning we leave Cusco at 04:30 with private transport, for a drive of about 6 hours towards Vilcabamba Huancacalle. We will have a stop at the Abro Mala pass (4325 m. alt.) where we can enjoy the lovely view. At a certain point in our trekking, we get to see mountaintops covered in snow, wild fauna and flora and agriculture, and grazing llamas and alpacas. After this pass, the climate will change, as we will go down towards ´the eyebrow of the jungle´, formed by dense woods in a rainy and cloudy environment, until we reach Santamari – Chaullay. Later, we will descend to Vilcabamba Huancacalle (2900 m. alt.), where we will have a great lunch before visiting the archeological park Rosaspata Vitcos y Ñusta for about 3 hours, after which we will spend the night in beautiful Vilcabamba Huancacalle.
Day 2: Huancacalle – Hututu
In the morning we will start our hike upwards at 06:00, after having enjoyed an excellent breakfast. This walk will take about 3 hours, until we reach the pass Qolpa kasa at 3864 m. alt. At the middle of the ascent, we´ll take the Inca-route, afterwards we will descend by Inca-route as well, towards Pampaconas. Here we will have lunch, after which we will continue the hike towards Hututu, where we will stay for the night
Day 3: Hututu – Vista Alegre
We will start our walk todat near the range for the Inca hike. This will be beyond your imagination. We will pass 2 wooden bridges, over the rivers Chalca and Locomayo. After this, we will enter a spectacular virgin wood, covered in mosses, bromeliads and filled with many brightly-colored bird species. Furthermore we will see beautiful sections of Inca path and a short descend will offer us miraculous views of the peaks of the dense forest. In the Vilcabamba mountain range especially we will see and pass through a great part of the forest, before we go upwards to Vista Alegre.
Day 4: Vista Alegre – Concevidayoc
This route will take us through various amazing landscapes as well. The hike will continue downwards, following the incatrail. After this we will rise a bit more as we will move along. The vegetation gets wilder here, as we’re walking through tropical forest. In this zone, there are various miraculous views, at different places. This place is ideal to observe many different types of birds and it is very special for its geography. In the area of Consevidayoc are many hikes which go towards houses of people living there and to the countryside.
Day 5: Concevidayoc – Espiritu Pampa
Today, our hike will take only 4 hours, to Espiritu Pampa. After the lunch, we will explore the archeological park of Espiritu Pampa. Some of the archeological heritage is to be found in the middle of trees, as the park is covered in the woods. At the moment, the ministry of culture is cleaning the park and still doing excavations. This night, we will have our well-deserved rest in Espíritu Pampa, after 4 hours of walking and 3 hours of expedition.
Day 6: Espíritu Pampa – Chihuankiry – Kiteny – Quillabamba
Today, our walk will take about 5 hours until we reach Chihuankiry where we will have a great lunch, after which we will take public transport towards Kiteny, for an hour and a half. In Kiteny, we will have other transport of 4 hours towards Quillabamba at 1050 m. alt. Here we will camp en Serranuyos, 10 minutes away from Quillabamba with transport. We will pass the night here. Along the hike today, we will be able to see tropical agriculture and flora and fauna.
Day 7: Quillabamba Serranuyoc – Cusco
In Serranuyoc we will visit places where they cultivate coffee, cocoa, coca, after which we will make chocolate and coffee ourselves! After this we will have time to enjoy the view of the River Chuyapy, the name of which means ´Clean River´, we will take a bath here and relax, after this intensive but amazing trekking. After lunch, we will return to Cusco in 5 hours.
What is included?

- Collection from your hotel in the morning of trek departure.
- Transport from Cusco to the trailhead at the beginning of the trek in private car
- Return private transport to Cusco at the end of the trip (from Phinaya)
- English/Quechua/Spanish speaking professional guide (you will have an assistant guide for groups over 6 people).
- Tents – 2 people in a 4 person tent which allows for greater comfort, and also storage of backpacks.
- Basic foam mattress. If you require greater comfort during the trek we can hire you an inflatable mattress (eg. Thermarest) .
- Chef and Cooking equipment (Assistants are provided for larger groups)
- Toilet tent

- One textile snack bag per person, to avoid the usage of plastic bags that contaminate our environment
- Meals as indicated in the itinerary (optional vegetarian food). Our professional cooks prepare meals that incorporate elements of the western diet and also traditional Peruvian delicacies. (Please communicate with your guide/cook during the trek if you have a preference for certain types of dishes). Salads, if served, are washed in boiled water.
- Others: hot water every morning and evening for washing purposes / boiled water to fill in your water bottle every morning and night, and at lunch time if requested with enough time ahead
- Bio-degradable personal hand soaps
- Horses (for equipment and personal items) including horsemen. They carry camping equipment, food and kitchen utensils. We provide duffel bags at your briefing for your personal items (up to 7 kg/15lbs per person).
- 1 emergency horse which can be ridden if you are feeling ill or if are a little slower
- Dining tent with camp tables and chairs & Kitchen tent for the cook to prepare meals
- Tents for our staff to sleep in
- First aid kit including emergency oxygen bottle

- Dinner on the last night.
- Sleeping bags – If you haven’t got a sleeping bag or you don’t want the hassle of bringing one all the way to Peru with you, then we have sleeping bags for hire.
- Tips: please note that our agency staff is well paid so please feel free to tip or not as you wish.
What we recommend that your bring
- A light day pack with a change of clothes for the whole period of the trek – prepare for a vast range of changes in temperature
- Rain gear (jacket and pants if available) or rain poncho. Plastic ponchos can be bought for about $1 in Cusco .
- Strong footwear, waterproof trekking boots recommended. Extra socks are a must.
- Sandals or plastic slip on thongs are also good to give your feet a chance to breath in the evenings if you wish to carry them.
- Warm clothes, including jacket, fleeces, gloves, scarf and beanie/touk.
- Thermal clothing is also recommended, especially for sleeping. * This is a particularly cold trek, you should make sure you have a lot of very warm clothes.
- Sleeping bag (we can hire these to you)
- Torch/ Flashlight and spare batteries
- Camera, films and batteries (batteries consume more quickly under cold conditions)
- Hat or cap to protect you from the sun, rain and cold
- Sun block
- After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body

- Snacks: biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, muesli, etc.

- We advise you to bring water sterilizing tablets in case you collect water from streams.
- Your own medical kit with any special medications that you might require, paracetamol, second skin for blisters etc.
